It has been an immense privilege to serve my Party, my state, and my country for so many years. In all my years in politics and government, though, our challenges have never been as stark as they are today. More than ever, it is abundantly clear that only the Democratic Party is equipped to address these challenges. As we select a DNC Chair, for the sake of our country, we have to get it right.
That is why I am supporting Jaime Harrison.
I have held both elected and appointed positions in government. The DNC Chair is neither, and it requires a different set of experiences and skills—which Jaime possesses in abundance. As a State Party Chair in a red state, Jaime is intimately familiar with our Party organization and knows how to strengthen it from the grassroots up. I have seen him do it in South Carolina, where he inherited a political climate far more hostile to Democrats than it was when I ran for office. As Whip Clyburn’s Floor Director, he made uniting our diverse party look easy, though I know from experience it can be quite the challenge. These are the attributes we must seek in our next DNC Chair.
My whole career has been devoted to promoting upward mobility through education. Jaime has lived it. He knows that the mission of the Democratic Party must be to expand opportunity for all Americans, at all stages of life. And he’s done it directly, teaching at his high school alma mater and building the non-profit organization College Summit from four people in one office to a national force increasing access to higher education for underprivileged students. Jaime will similarly transform the Democratic Party into a community organization with a meaningful presence in every community in this great country so that every American knows that our Party is the one that fights for them.
I ask that you join me in supporting Jaime Harrison to lead our Party in this critical time.
Former U.S. Secretary of Education and Governor of South Carolina
