JAIME HARRISON STATEMENT ON DAKOTA ACCESS AND KEYSTONE XL PIPELINES

Columbia, SC–Jaime Harrison released the following statement today on reports that President Trump will sign executive actions to proceed with the construction of the Dakota Access and Keystone XL oil pipelines:

“Last month, I applauded the Obama Administration’s decision to seek an alternative route for the Dakota Access Pipeline.  At the time, I issued the following warning: ‘make no mistake: if the Trump Administration attempts to reverse today’s decision, or otherwise disregards the legitimate interests and concerns of Indigenous peoples, the Democratic Party will stand strongly with the first Americans.’

“I meant what I said.  I condemn President Trump’s decision to proceed with these ill-considered pipelines.  The Democratic Party will stand strongly with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and all the communities along the routes of both pipelines that will be put at risk as a result of today’s rash action.

“The Trump Administration has made it clear that they will gladly do the bidding of big oil companies.  Democrats will fight against Republican corporate welfare to protect our environment and the dignity of all Americans, from Native Americans to the most recent immigrants and everyone in between.”
