Jaime Harrison Statement on Betsy DeVos Hearing

Columbia, SC–Jaime Harrison released the following statement on Secretary of Education-Designate Betsy DeVos’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee.  Yesterday, Harrison picked up the endorsement of Former Secretary of Education Richard Riley, who held the position from 1993 until 2001 and was ranked by Time magazine as one of the 10 best Cabinet secretaries of the 20th Century.

“With my experiences as a high school teacher, an education non-profit leader, and an African American who attended public schools in South Carolina, I know that when politicians say that protecting civil rights should be left to the states, that means kids in much of the country will be left unprotected. In South Carolina, the DeVos family and state Republicans have consistently fought to undermine public education by funneling public funds to unaccountable private schools. Education is essential in today’s society, and is the greatest factor in breaking the cycle of poverty.  I’m an example of the importance of a good education.  In order to give our kids a chance at success, the Senate must reject Betsy DeVos and her antiquated thinking.”
